San Francisco is set to unveil a new public space: a 2-mile-long, 43-acre oceanfront park along the City's western edge, which will replace part of The Great Highway. The park will stretch from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard and is set to open on April 12, 2025, according to sfchronicle.com.
The idea for transforming part of The Great Highway into a park first emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the road was temporarily closed to vehicles. In November 2024, Proposition K was passed, permanently closing the highway to traffic between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard, as reported by theguardian.com.
According to sfpark.org, the new park will feature a variety of amenities, including lounge areas with seating and hammocks, spaces for live music and performances, a skate spot, fitness equipment, bike parking, and a nature exploration area for children. Additionally, the park will showcase murals and sculptures celebrating surfing, local marine life, and the neighborhood’s history.
A public naming contest will be held to select the park's official name. The voting period will run from March 20 to April 2, according to sfchronicle.com. The park will officially open on April 12, 2025, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration. Designed with pedestrians and cyclists in mind, this new park aims to make Ocean Beach more inviting and will enhance the overall experience of San Francisco.
