Road To The Final: G7
by Benton Shappell
Although the seventh-grade basketball regular season has ended, the team isn’t done playing yet—they’re heading to the finals! The season began on December 7, and in their first three games, the seventh-grade team won by over 10 points each time. Unfortunately, they lost to Saint Monica on December 21. The new year didn’t start off well for them either, as they also lost to Salesian, the top-ranked team, by four points on January 18. The game was close and exciting the entire time, but Coach Jarrod S. is confident that New School can defeat Salesian in the seventh-grade finals.
On January 19, the seventh grade pulled off an incredible comeback against St. Anne. At one point, New School was down by 10 points, but they fought back to win by over five. Fans described the game as thrilling, calling it the most exciting of the regular season. The G7 team then went on to defeat Saint Peter Pacifica by nearly 25 points and also beat Stratford, the lowest-ranked team, in the same weekend. The regular season ended with a 6-2 record, securing them the second seed.
In the playoffs, as the second-ranked team, G7 defeated Good Shepherd by 7 points, with a final score of 28–21. This victory means New School will play Salesian in the finals! Coach Jarrod S. praised the team’s basketball IQ and their execution of plays. He also mentioned that to prepare for the finals, the team needs to improve their shooting percentage for both 3-pointers and mid-range shots. The coach pointed out the team’s improvement, noting, “In our first week, we scored 16 points, and in our last game of the regular season, we scored 36!”
The finals will be held at 6:15 p.m. at Town School on Thursday, against Salesian, though the game may have already taken place by the time this is published. Next season, Coach Jarrod will be coaching the team again, which promises to make for an incredible season. The seventh-grade team is looking forward to playing again next year, with plenty of competition and excitement ahead!
