The Team To Watch Next Year: G5/G6

by Benton Shappell

The fifth and sixth grade basketball team have improved significantly. Even though they didn’t perform well this year, they are sure to do much better next year! The team is a combination of players from both 5th and 6th grade. They lost four times in a row at the start of the season, facing Bayview YMCA, Zion Lutheran, St. Anne, and Cornerstone, which was a disappointing way to begin. However, after winter break, New School’s G5/6 team managed to win two games in a row!

The first victory came on January 10 against KZV Armenian School, whom they beat by six points. Then, just one day later, the 6th grade team triumphed over the International School of San Francisco on January 11, winning by just one point in a thrilling game.

Unfortunately, the season ended with two more losses, against Salesian and Town School for Boys, with Town being the top-ranked team. Despite the tough losses, the team ended the season with a 2-6 record, tying for the 7th seed. Coach Matt said, “G5/6 is such a resilient group. What they lack in size, they make up for in heart and hustle.” The coach also explained that the team faced challenges because many of the players are in 5th grade, and this was the first year many had played organized basketball in a league. He added that the team “improved immensely” and learned one of the most important lessons of sports: humility. Fans should get ready for next year because the 5th and 6th grade team is sure to “be back and better than ever!”
